Tonbo Imaging India Limited
Sector: Defence Electronics (Electro-Optical / Infrared systems)
1. Executive Overview
Tonbo Imaging India Limited is a global defence electronics original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in the electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) segment. It designs, develops and manufactures sensing, processing, communication and guidance systems for surveillance, reconnaissance, targeting and control. The portfolio covers thermal imaging cores, weapon sights, hand-held thermal binoculars, targeting systems, missile seekers, fire control systems and missile guidance systems, all positioned to enable autonomy on the battlefield.
The company was incorporated in 2003 as a subsidiary of a research company that provided R&D and technology development services. In 2012, after its Promoters bought out the erstwhile subsidiary, it moved into defence-focused product manufacturing. It has built a 339-member team, of which 130 are R&D engineers (~38% of the workforce) at its Bengaluru R&D centre. It uses an asset-light model: design and IP are in-house, and manufacturing is outsourced to EMS partners such as Kaynes Technology India Limited and Avalon Technology and Services Private Limited.
On scale and position, the company cites a Frost & Sullivan (F&S) industry report for these claims:
Largest manufacturer by sales value of thermal imaging systems to government and defence agencies in India (April 2024 – March 2026).
94% market share of India's thermal imaging exports by units (FY24–FY26).
28,000+ systems deployed across 24 countries as of June 30, 2026.
Ownership of 100% of its intellectual property since Fiscal 2024, after buying it from CEAQ Singapore for ₹183.19 Cr. This leaves no dependence on external technology partners.
An ITAR-free EO/IR portfolio, which allows it to serve export-sensitive markets. It qualifies as an IDDM (Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) supplier under India's Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020.
Geographic footprint: The company has supplied to 24 countries, including India, Armenia, Romania, Slovenia, USA, Morocco, South Korea, UAE, Philippines, Singapore, North Macedonia, Australia and Taiwan. Revenue mix has swung sharply between periods. Exports were 65.52% of revenue in FY25 but only 5.57% in FY26 and 0.25% in the three months to June 2026, as domestic orders now dominate. The confirmed order book was ₹314.24 Cr at June 30, 2026, plus ₹118.15 Cr of fresh orders received between July 1 and September 30, 2026.

2. Business Model and Revenue Streams
Operating model
Asset-light, IP-led OEM: core design and IP are developed in-house, then prototyped at the R&D centre and scaled through certified EMS partners under non-exclusive purchase-order arrangements. This keeps capex low and focuses spend on R&D.
Customers: global militaries, system integrators supplying militaries, NATO-country procurements, law-enforcement and homeland-security agencies, and other defence OEMs.
Contract model: revenue comes mainly from competitive tenders that are short-term and non-recurring, with no annuity income. Pricing is fixed in advance. Performance bank guarantees (3%–5% of order value, 1–5 years) are typical.
Certifications: the R&D centre holds ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and ISO 28000:2022.

- Experienced founder-led management: three Promoters have worked together for 21+ years, with backgrounds in the US Department of Defense and Sarnoff Corporation. The company has won CNBC and Marico Innovation Foundation awards.
5. Future Growth Strategy
- Deeper R&D investment: build both customer-funded and in-house innovation; plan short-range canister-launched loitering munitions, jet-turbine long-range reconnaissance platforms, remote weapon stations for autonomous sentries and high-altitude balloon platforms; raise the patent count.
- Continued portfolio diversification: move from tactical sights to integrated autonomous platform systems, and commercialise WaveStrike HPM, funded through iDEX grant, internal accruals and bank term loan.
- Strategic partnerships with OEMs and defence institutions: co-develop with government labs and defence PSUs to become the nominated supplier; supply CKD kits and EO cores for white-labelling by local OEMs, which preserves local-manufacture status; has a binding agreement for a ₹1.50 Cr investment (~5% stake) in an early-stage defence-technology company.
- Geographic expansion: add customers in South America, South East Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Europe; pursue NATO procurement via European system integrators; two sales hires have been added, and an African order for telescopic weapon sights was recently received.
- Asset-light global scaling: partner with domestic OEMs in each target country instead of building local plants, keeping IP control while sharing after-sales and local-sourcing burdens.
